Travel to and from Australia for 5 years:

• You can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want for a period of 5 years from the date the visa is granted, as long as the travel facility on the visa remains valid. If you plan to travel beyond the initial 5-year period, you will need to apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) or consider Australian citizenship, which eliminates the need for a visa to enter Australia.

The Carer Visa (Subclass 836) has a visa application cost of AUD 2,055.00 for the main applicant. There is also an additional charge for each family member included in the application.

There are no specific conditions attached to the Carer Visa (Subclass 836). However, general visa conditions such as abiding by Australian laws and complying with visa reporting obligations still apply.

The processing time for a new Carer visa application can vary but may take at least 7 years to process based on current planning levels. Processing times are subject to change and individual circumstances.

For Applicant:

• You must be a carer for your Australian relative or a family member of your relative who lives with them and requires care.
• You should be willing and able to provide ongoing substantial care, continuing support, or assistance based on the medical condition and care needs of your Australian relative or their family member.
• You must be sponsored by an eligible sponsor who agrees to support you financially and provide housing for the first 2 years in Australia.
• You must hold or have held any substantive visa (excluding Transit visa subclass 771) or have made a valid application for a subclass 836 visa within a specified time.
• Your immigration history will be assessed, and having a visa cancellation or previous application refusal may affect your eligibility. However, there are exceptions in some circumstances, so refer to “Limitations on applications in Australia” for further information.

For Sponsor:

• The sponsor must be a near relative or relative of the applicant.
• The sponsor must be settled and usually resident in Australia, 18 years of age or older, and an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
• The sponsor must agree to provide support, housing, and financial assistance for the first 2 years the applicant lives in Australia. The sponsor must also support any family members who apply with the applicant.
• If the sponsor is the partner of the applicant’s relative, they must live together.

Be assessed as requiring care:

• You or a family member who lives with you must be assessed by Bupa Medical Visa Services as having a long-term or permanent medical condition.
• The medical condition should require help with practical aspects of daily life for a minimum period of 2 years.

Unable to reasonably access care in Australia:

• You or a family member who lives with you must demonstrate that reasonable care options are not accessible in Australia, whether from another relative, welfare, hospital, or community nursing service.
