Australia has expanded its biometric collection programme to include visa applicants in India, effective 26 October 2026.
According to an announcement by the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, people lodging new Australian visa applications in India from this date may be required to provide biometric information as part of the visa application process.
This information may include fingerprints and a facial image.
Australia already collects biometric information from visa applicants in nearly 60 countries. The inclusion of India extends the existing programme as part of the Australian Government's efforts to maintain a secure, efficient and trusted visa system.
What Are Biometrics? Biometrics are personal identifying information used to help verify an individual's identity.
For Australian visa applications, biometric information may include: Fingerprints: Digital scans of an applicant's fingerprints. Facial image: A digital image of an applicant's face.
The Department of Home Affairs uses biometric information as part of its identity verification processes. These measures help protect legitimate applicants from identity misuse, reduce fraud and support the integrity of Australia's migration system.
Who Is Affected by the New Biometrics Requirements?
The expanded programme applies to new Australian visa applications lodged in India on or after 26 October 2026.
However, this does not mean every applicant will automatically be required to provide biometrics.
The Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants if they need to provide biometric information and will issue instructions explaining how to complete the process.
The Australian High Commission has also confirmed that:
Applications lodged before 26 October 2026 are not affected by this change.
Visas already granted are not affected.
Applicants who receive a biometric request will be given instructions on the required steps.
How Can Applicants Provide Their Biometrics?
Depending on their individual circumstances and eligibility, applicants may be asked to complete the process through one of the following options.
1. Australian Biometrics Collection Centre (ABCC)
Applicants may be required to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre in person to provide their biometric information.
There are 16 Australian Biometrics Collection Centres across India, operated by VFS Global.
At the centre, applicants may have their fingerprints scanned and a facial image captured.
Applicants should wait for their official biometric requirement letter before arranging an appointment.
2. Australian Immi App
Eligible applicants may also be able to provide their identity information digitally through the Australian Immi App.
The app allows eligible applicants to submit their passport details and a live facial image without attending an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre.
To use the app, applicants must have:
An official biometric requirement letter containing a Visa Lodgement Number (VLN) beginning with AUI.
A valid passport.
A compatible smartphone and the required device settings.
The availability of this option depends on the applicant meeting the Department's requirements.
Applicants who do not meet the app requirements will need to follow the instructions provided by the Department, which may require attending an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre.
Will the New Requirements Affect Visa Processing Times?
According to the Australian High Commission, the expansion of the biometrics programme is not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete any requested biometric requirements promptly.
Applicants should monitor their email communications after lodging their visa applications, as the Department may send biometric instructions directly to them or their authorised representative.
Waiting for the official notification before arranging biometric collection is also important.
How Is Biometric Information Protected?
The Australian Government has stated that biometric information is collected, stored and managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws.
The information is securely processed and transmitted through encrypted channels, with safeguards intended to ensure that personal information is handled lawfully and securely.
Further details about the collection, use and storage of biometric information are available through the Department of Home Affairs.
